Alcoa began producing aluminum in Badin, NC in 1916 at Alcoa Badin Works. The town was built to sustain the company and four Yadkin River dams, were built to support the electric needs of Alcoa's Badin Works. The plant was closed in 2007. At issue now is whether Alcoa can still oeprate the dams and generate power, given that it is no longer providing jobs for the people of Badin and Stanly County. In November, 2010 NC regulators revoked Alcoa's certification to operate dams along the Yadkin River. The NC Dept of Environment and Natural Resources claimed that Alcoa failed to displose water quality details. The withdrawal of certification would essentially block Alcoa's bid to get federal apporoval (FERC) to operate four dams for up to 50 more years.
