Little Sugar Creek Greenway-11.jpg
Buried under concrete for more than a half century, Little Sugar Creek was daylighted by Mecklenburg County with help from the North Carolina Clean Water Management Trust Fund. Still under construction when this photograph was taken, the greenway beside the creek stimulated major economic development at this close-to-downtown location. The massive mixed-use development The Metropolitan (mid-rise building at upper left) includes residential, retail, restaurants and offices. The developer says the Littel Sugar Creek Greenway greenway, part of a planned 15-mile trail that will eventually connect to the thousand-plus Carolina Thread Trail, is a primary means of attracting tenants, a testimony to the role of environmental and recreational amenities for economic development.
