Statue of Captain James Jack "Spirit of Mecklenburg", erected 2010 on the Little Sugar Creek Greenway, Charlotte, NC . First of several historic monuments planned for the greenway. History shows Captain Jack delivered the "Meck Dec"-- Mecklenburg County's Declaration of Independence -- to the Second Continental Congress around May 20, 1775-- more than a year before the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The May 20th Society in Charlotte is dedicated to preserving and publicizing this bit of local history and commissioned this sculpture by Charlotte artist Charles Fagan.
