Sand bags are placed to slow beach erosion on Ocean Isle Beach in South Carolina. Ocean Isle is an example of poor beach management in that it was developed with canals draining wetlands that would otherwise hold storm water and stabilize the beach. Also, homes were built on top of dunes. The Army Corps of Engineers has been renourishing parts of the island to hold back the beach erosion but this section, the easternmost tip of the island, is beyond repair.
