They expect it can produce at least 140,000 ounces per year for 12 years beginning 2012. Historic Haile Gold Mine north of Kershaw , SC  first mined  in the 1800s, it has intermittently produced gold or pyrite (during WWII) and by mid 1900s had produced more gold than any other mine in the eastern US. <br />
Australian Company OceanaGold purchased the mine in 2015 and expects to mine $2 billion worth of gold then close the mine around 2030.<br />
It is the largest open pit gold mine in the eastern US. Environmental impact is considerable with destroyed wetlands and streams. Company has taken measures to protect surrounding land from toxic run-off with a 500-acre tailings pond.  Positive economic impact on area with estimated 1000 direct or indirect jobs related to the mine. <br />
The mine footprint is 4600 acres, expanded since this aerial photo taken in 2010.
