Badin-Alcoa { 28 images } Created 17 Dec 2010

Small town Badin, North Carolina and nearby dams on the Yadkin River were built in the early 1900s by ALCOA, an aluminum company. Federal permits to create the dams were issued because of promised employment for the citizens of Stanly County. ALCOA closed in 2007, devastating the town of Badin. Now the state of NC and other parties believe ALCOA should not be re-permitted to operate the dams.

  • Alcoa began producing aluminum in Badin, NC in 1916 at Alcoa Badin Works. The town was built to sustain the company and four Yadkin River dams, were built to support the electric needs of Alcoa's Badin Works. The plant was closed in 2007. At issue now is whether Alcoa can still oeprate the dams and generate power, given that it is no longer providing jobs for the people of Badin and Stanly County. In November, 2010 NC regulators revoked Alcoa's certification to operate dams along the Yadkin River. The NC Dept of Environment and Natural Resources claimed that Alcoa failed to displose water quality details. The withdrawal of certification would essentially block Alcoa's bid to get federal apporoval (FERC) to operate four dams for up to 50 more years.

  • Town of Badin, built in the early 1900s by French Aluminum Company, later ALCOA, now the site of controversy over ALCOA's right to operate dams built for ALCOA's now-shuttered aluminum smelter. ALCOA wants to renew its FERC license to oeprate the dams, some locals say the righs to the river belong to the people and since the plant is no longer providing jobs, ALCOA should not have the right to generate electriicty for its own profit.
